Let Sleeping dogs lie!

I really hate this Idiom. Even though I have learned over the years how important it can be to follow this, I also know that if that dog is in your way, it’s best to kick it, wake it up, and deal with the situation right then! You can’t be afraid of upsetting the beast and avoiding a subject that needs your attention right away. So many times we let the opportunity to deal with a problem pass because we don’t want to upset someone else, while we just get more upset ourselves. I don’t want to be the antagonizer, any more than the next guy, but I hate missing an opportunity to rectify a bad situation.

There is another Idiom I like better, that I think deals with the same thing, only more professionally. Pick your battles! This is a much better outlook on the same concept. As I have stated before, we need to take a step back and look at our problem carefully before we act on it in any way. Once we do this we will have a better idea what the best plan of action is to deal with it rationally, and with the least amount of hurt feelings on either side. If It’s a work issue deal with it at work, but not in front of everyone, pull the person aside and talk it out in private. If It’s a personal issue deal with it at home, or away from the office, the less people involved the better, in both cases. Don’t let it fester too long, that just makes you more angry, and them less understanding of the problem.

I am very thankful I have learned these two very important lessons early in my life. I have gained respect by knowing how, and when to breach a subject. I also have saved myself many headaches, or worse lost friendships. As I have said so many times before , Honesty is the key to a good relationship, of any kind. Just be sure that your timing, and attitude are in sync. No one likes a hot head or a grudge holder!
