kitchen Angst!

With Oktoberfest coming to a close on Saturday, and the Beer festival in Denver kicking off on October 9th. I thought I would take some time discussing the Purity laws of Germany. I also thought this would be the perfect subject to try out a more interactive style of approaching my blogs on “fun food facts” . It was suggested to me by my friend Derek who happens to live in Düsseldorf, Germany. The Capital of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, and the home of several brewpubs that take pride in still adhering to the strict German beer purity laws. Cologne is another city that hes several as well. They are very close to each other and tend to fight over whose beer is better. Well they seem to fight about whose better in general, not just over beer. You can find brewery’s all over Germany that follow the more strict laws, however most are in this region.
Now I want you to answer these questions for me:

who can tell me what the German beer purity laws are?

When were they first introduced? and why?

How do they differ today from the past, if at all?

How do they differ from other countries laws on brewing beer?

With the internet this really isn’t much of a challenge I know, but I thought it would be fun. I will do a follow up blog on this subject and discuss the answers later. I haven’t decided yet when that will be (I want to see what kind of response I get from you first)! My first thought is to give the answers tomorrow. However I feel that may not give everyone who wants to participate enough time to do so, for this first one I am playing it by ear. I do want to make this more of a regular thing, so please respond and give me feedback.
