HEY! who wants to field dress a moose with me!!!

Published by jameslockwood at 9:15 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

Yes this a food blog but I have to get just a little political here. I mean really what was she thinking? I’m sorry in advance to all you Sarah Palin fans out there for what I am about to say, But I ‘m going to say it just the same! I don’t really care that she was a beauty queen, or that she is the mother of five with her first grandchild on the way. I do on the other hand care that she would get on stage and proudly proclaim her ability to Field dress a freaking moose, and think that qualifies her to be the vice president of the United States! Or President for that matter( John is old and his ticky ticker isn’t what it used to be)
So lets talk about Butchery a bit… Not many people can say they have killed there own supper. I have and am very proud to say so. If you are a hunter (for food not just sport) you know where I’m going with this. I don’t agree that hunting is a sport, hunting is a means to an end. Putting food on the table for your family. That is the way it started and thats is how it should stay! Growing up in Texas we raised our own chickens, cattle and ducks (my two favorites were named Thanksgiving and Christmas). My uncle had Pigs, we always had meat in the freezer and therefor food on the table.
When I was in culinary school one of my instructors decided to give a demo on taking the live animal to the table. He had become very frustrated with the disrespect of the product being shown by the students. If you Understand what it takes to raise the animal, feed it, care for it, and even love it, you wont waist it when you get it in your kitchen! It may just be a breast of chicken now but someone put a lot of time into that bird before you got it.
The demo was a complete disaster! We had two beautiful mallard ducks, 15 students and one hatchet! It was not a pretty day in Vermont. The lesson on the other hand was a huge success. If you stop and take the time to think about what you are putting into your body or how it got to you in the first place, you will show it the respect it deserves. I will say it again no matter what we eat, someone had to grow it, raise it, or at the very least harvest it. I am amazed at how low the prices of food are considering the time and effort it takes to produce.
Lets get back to my rant for a bit now. It.s not just that Sarah Palin is a gun toting, pro life, anti gay conservative that bothers me the most. It’s the fact that this beauty queen, soccer mom can field dress a moose and stated it in her speech at the GOP convention. That makes me just a little worried about having her dealing with the leaders of other countries (friend or foe). I feel we need someone with a backbone yes but not someone who knows how to cut it out!
I am not saying we should all raise our own food and become self sustaining… just become more aware.

US politicians have a tendency to say odd things like this. I think they believe it will make them seem more human, but it just makes them seem weird. It goes back to that whole idea of the First Lady being important: I can’t think of any other country where the spouse of the President or Prime Minister gets so much press time. Who cares about the politician’s spouse? Who cares what they can cook? Can they do a good job of picking their cabinet and running the country? That’s what I want to know. I prefer my politicians less human, more business-like.
