Food as theater! Going out to eat is just like a brodway production!
When we go out to eat we don’t always think of what goes into pulling it off. I am talking of course of the “behind the scenes” activity. We all know what it takes to cook a meal at home, but have you ever thought about how that differs from a restaurant? well I have… being in the business for two decades now, I NEVER cook at home, I can’t, I don’t know how. I can however cook breakfast for 80 people in under a hour (and not break a sweat) in a restaurant.
That is what I do, I know it well and embrace it. It is a life often looked down upon or considered a low class job, but I will disprove all of these thoughts in this blog (I hope)!
As a chef I have had the pleasure of being in the presence of some of the worlds biggest stars. I have cooked for some of the elite in the modern day! That means nothing to me. My friends on the other hand are fascinated. I feel I need to let the cat out of the bag as it were, and tell some of my stories, as well as give advice on how to be a better host/cook! Cooking is simple, it only takes a basic knowledge of chemistry, and timing.
Please bear with me as I figure this all out, I am new to the whole “blog thing” but I do want to do a good job and think what I have to say will be interesting as well as insightful. I am a chef (not a writer) after all, so please overlook my grammar and writing skills. I will do my best and always use “spell check” at least.
I want to go back to my Title now… no matter if we are cooking at home, or professionally, it is a performance. we are on stage. Everything we do will be viewed, Smelled, heard, tasted ,felt and analyzed. The cook is the one artist ,whose work of art ,touches all 5 senses! That is a huge hurdle to overcome. We have to think about color, smell, sound, mouth feel, as well as taste! If it doesn’t look good, smell good, sound good, feel good… It won’t TASTE GOOD!
That my friends is a lot of pressure! I hope to take some of that away with this blog. Answering your questions and giving you the advice you haven’t even thought about yet! I look forward to your input and response I thrive on questions so don’t be shy! I will do my best to answer (or guide you in the right direction on) all questions!
Lets have fun with this and enjoy each others company… That makes life worth living!
